I had the lovely opportunity to talk with the owner of Beta club in which I DJ when I go back home during breaks. I have been corresponding emails and text messages with the owner, asking him questions about the club scene and the DJ life that he used to live. For privacy purposes, he would like to remain unknown. So, I will call him Josh.
Me: Watsup Josh? How's Beta? Can I interview you for my signature project upon DJing?
Josh: Sure! Beta is alright. The rent price is way too high right now in Denver and I feel like in the future Beta might close.
Me: What!? You can't close Beta! Beta means so much to people like me, you and DJ Knives.
Josh: I know but the only nights that are thriving are friday nights and saturday nights. These two nights can't help pay for our monthly land rent.
Me: So tell me, was Beta the start of your dreams? I know you've wanted to become a successful DJ, but did you believe Beta helped achieve those dreams?
Josh: Honestly, yes. I think something about DJing was also the fact that I got to interact with all these crazy and determined individuals, and opening the club allowed me to interact more. I wasn't a true passionate DJ like you or DJ knives. I was more about the parties and the craziness. So I believe opening the club helped me haha.
Me: That's awesome. So what did you parents think? I mean, I have crazy stereotypical Asian parents who are so against DJs and the idea of like music festivals.
Josh: Well my parents hated the scene too. But after me moving out, they kind of stopped caring. I mean they're proud now that I was able to succeed in something I wanted to do you know? Yea, I've met your parents. They're crazy. Haha, I mean they're not wrong. EDM life is full of partying, drugs and alcohol, but thats what people only focus on you know? They don't focus on how everyone there is truly passionate about the music, and are still determined individuals.
Me: That's what I try to tell them! I tell them that I feel like when I go to these EDM festivals, I feel like I finally found a place in the world, where no one judges me and everyone loves me because we have that passion of music.
Josh: Yea, totally man. People NEED to focus more on the happiness and safe haven that these communities bring to the world.
Me: I've been really frustrated about my productions lately, I've been comparing them to pros and they sound terrible and I feel like this dream that I really want won't happen.
Josh: You cannot say that. Everyone starts off comparing their music. But you know what makes each producer's or artist's music unique? It's the fact that they made their own creations. Look at Rezz, or Nghtmre. Their music is so unique and awesome because it's simple. It's simple yet when people listen to it, it's so complex. When I built this club, I couldn't compare this to other clubs. I added my personal touches and goals in there and thats what makes it mine.
